Latest Developments

Researchers at Google have developed a groundbreaking AI-powered game engine that simulates the classic video game DOOM in real-time with interactive gameplay. This technology, called GameNGen, generates the game world and its evolution in real-time, as a player interacts with it, achieving high-quality visuals and gameplay. It's a major step forward in game development and offers a new way to create and play games.

Key Highlights:

  1. Real-time simulation - The AI engine can simulate classic games like DOOM at over 20 frames per second, which is comparable to the speed of traditional game engines.

  2. High-quality visuals - GameNGen's next-frame prediction achieves a Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) of 29.4, comparable to the quality of lossy JPEG compression. This means the visuals generated are remarkably close to the original DOOM graphics.

  3. Long-term stability - The engine can maintain consistent quality over long trajectories, unlike other AI-based game simulation methods.

  4. Beyond games - This technology has potential applications beyond just games. It could be used to generate dynamic simulations for training, education, and even creating novel interactive experiences in various fields.

Bland AI, an innovative San Francisco-based startup specializing in AI-powered phone call automation, has raised $16 million in Series A funding. They are developing hyper-realistic AI agents to handle a wide array of phone-based tasks for enterprises, including customer support, sales, and internal operations. Bland AI provides a platform for developers to build, train, and deploy reliable AI agents that sound just like humans and can respond without hallucinating.

Key Highlights:

  1. Hyper-realistic AI Agents - These agents are designed to understand human emotions and can converse in multiple languages, providing a personalized and engaging experience for customers. They are meticulously trained to reflect a brand's identity and voice, acting as virtual representatives of a company.

  2. Conversational Pathways - This feature helps businesses craft a detailed decision tree of prompts, guiding the AI agent's responses during customer interactions. The AI agent can navigate the pathway itself to figure out the right response, ensuring consistent, on-brand communication.

  3. Extensive Integrations - Bland AI seamlessly connects with existing enterprise systems like calendars for appointment scheduling, CRMs for updating customer records, payment gateways for processing transactions, and more.

  4. Try for free - Head to Bland AI’s website to design a conversational path for the AI agent and send a phone call for testing. We bet you won’t be able to differentiate if it’s human or an AI.

Quick Bites

  1. Google is rolling out Gems, a new feature that lets you customize Gemini to create your own personal AI experts, for Gemini Advanced subscribers starting today. They are also rolling out Imagen 3 in the coming days.

    • Gems are custom Gemini chatbots that act as experts on topics. Simply write instructions for your Gem, give it a name, and then chat with it whenever you want.

    • Google’s latest text-to-image model Imagen 3 will be available on all Gemini apps in the coming days.

    • Imagen 3 will also let you generate images of real people with careful considerations for safety guidelines.

  1. AI image generation Midjourney is venturing into hardware. They have not revealed any further details except that they are hiring a new hardware team which will be based in San Francisco.

  2. OpenAI is reportedly in talks to secure a multi-billion dollar investment that could propel its valuation to over $100 billion. The round is expected to be led by Thrive Capital with a commitment of around $1 billion, and Microsoft will also contribute.

Tools of the Trade

  1. Velvet: Logs every OpenAI and Anthropic request to your PostgreSQL database for easy storage and analysis of AI requests. It helps engineers optimize performance by enabling caching, batching, and creating datasets.

  2. Patched: Opensource framework to automate code reviews, docs, and patches with AI. Unlike copilots that assist during active development, Patched runs in the background, managing tasks autonomously.

  3. Kotaemon: An opensource clean and customizable RAG UI for chatting with your documents. Built with both end users and developers in mind.

  4. Awesome LLM Apps: Build awesome LLM apps using RAG to interact with data sources like GitHub, Gmail, PDFs, and YouTube videos through simple text. These apps will let you retrieve information, engage in chat, and extract insights directly from content on these platforms.

Hot Takes

  1. Be good. Future AIs are watching. ~

  2. one thing is for sure, writing code is a lot easier now. making something people want and will actually use? hasn’t changed

check out all of the slop that is appearing on producthunt (don’t wanna call them out but you’ll see it on the homepage as you scroll)

go read the comments on some of them, also slop (and probably AI)… “Game changer”? I’m sorry but that thing is not a game changer. incredible time to build but something that Claude 3.5 generated in 30 seconds probably won’t make you any money ~
